Video tutorial demonstrating the steps to put OS X Dashboard Widgets right on your Desktop, so they are always visible. This works on Tiger or Leopard.

If F12 doesnt bring up the dashboard: Some newer Mac keyboards have multiple functions assigned to the F12 key. If F12 turns up your system volume instead of bringing up the dashboard, you probably need to press Fn + F12 when the video prompts you to press F12.

  • what program did you use to record this??

  • iShowU

  • This doesn't work for OS X 10.5 Ideas?

  • I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "doesn't work". Chances are, though, that F12 on your keyboard isn't actually F12 (without some help). This tutorial definitely works on Leopard.

  • It doesn't work for me either on my new macbook pro. I did everything correct in the console/terminal. The widget just doesn't stay after I press the dashboard key.

  • Hard to say. In a nutshell: The console commands are case-sensitive, and you must restart the Dock. After that, bring up the dashboard, then click and drag the widget (keeping the mouse button held down), while you press the dashboard key again.

    You can verify the defaults have been applied correctly with the following console command (one line):

    defaults read com.apple.dashboard | grep devmode

    If it worked, you should see a line as follows: devmode = YES;

    Hope this helps!
