STOP THE HATE IN MOSCOW! - Rally for Solidarity of Caucasus Peoples

On the evening of Wednesday December 15, 2010, peoples of the Caucasus nations gathered at Times Square in New York City. This eclectic group made up of peoples from the North and South Caucasus united peacefully to show solidarity for the Caucasians living in Moscow. These Caucasians are being racially profiled and violently targeted because they hail from a diverse region.

Wednesday's demonstrations in Moscow resulted in the arrest of a 1000 individuals. Authorities seized weapons in a bid to prevent clashes between ethnic Russian and members of Caucasus ethnic groups.

These recent events exposed the ethnic tension of Russian society today.

Violence broke out on December 6, 2010 over the death of Yegor Svidirov, who was killed after being shot by Aslan Cherkesov, an ethnic Kabardian. Currently detained, Cherkesov claims self-defense after being assaulted by a group of ethnic Russians. The New York demonstration called for a fair investigation and just trial over these particular events.

After the death of Svidirov, mass riots erupted throughout Moscow. People who resembled those who originated from the Caucasus were discriminated against and violently beaten by Russian hate groups.

STATEMENT of the Kabardino-Balkaria Human Rights Centre in connection with the murder of Yegor Sviridov and the events on Manezh Square

We cannot but be disturbed and indignant at the anti-Caucasian hysteria fomented by some Russian media outlets and certain politicians in connection with the murder of Yegor Sviridov and the events on Manege Square.

Over the past two years we have registered at least five cases of murder of people from our republic in large Russian cities for reasons of racial and ethnic hatred. No significant publications on any of these cases have appeared in the Russian press. In none of these cases has an objective investigation been conducted or charges been brought against the murderers.

Similar examples can be cited for other North Caucasian republics.

We share the apprehensions of close relatives of Aslan Cherkesov, who has been accused of committing this crime, and of many residents of Kabardino-Balkaria, who fear that the investigation may not be conducted in an objective and unprejudiced fashion due to the enormous pressure being exerted on the investigator.

In this connection, we urge the Russian law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation of all the circumstances associated with the murder of Yegor Sviridov, including the assertion of Aslan Cherkesov that he acted in necessary self-defense.

We address an urgent appeal to young people from the Caucasus living in Moscow. Under no circumstances allow yourselves to be influenced by provocateurs of various kinds who call for revenge and confrontation. Unite and defend your rights and interests by legal and civilized means.
