It is great that Alan points out the importance of the vulnerability assessment as the first step of contingency planning. It is also important for the purpose to allocate costs on contingency planning. For example, if a company depends largely on the weather situation in a country, which means they are more vulnerable to extreme weather situation, then they could spend more on getting more accurate weather report. Companies should always seek ways to plan more cost efficient. - Helen Z. C44

Maybe I've watched too many Hollywood movies, I am just wondering how in a kidnap situation, the victim's family is often advised not to involve the police. How efficient is the police when dealing with serious kidnap situation and how reliable are they in protecting the victim? Is there anywhere else the victim's family can ask for help?

I'm not sure if you are aware that in India, UAE and Saudi Arabia, they are looking to cut RIM's product soon. This ties in great with what you mentioned about if Blackberrys will work or not in a country. but of course, this isn't totally set in yet. It will be interesting to see how people will reogranize their LOST COM scenarios if Blackberrys no longer work there. - Stephanie F, MGTC44

After watching the video, I was wondering if there's a more sophisticated way to ensure the safety of high profile individuals in a foreign country? Seems like right now the norm is Blackberrys, satellite phones, and Skype. But what about GPS locators to track the exact location and the well being of an individual? If someone were to get seriously injured, even a 3 day lag in response may be too late!

Very informative.I think every business traveler should be aware of the utility of Blackberry and related satellite devices. However, wouldn't kidnappers destroy any sort of devices they find on victims? What can one do in such cases? Companies should also be confidential about the information that is being sent through communication machines such as fax, email etc. in such cases, there should be a private channel where information is routed only to the concerned officials.

yes, you have to make sure that the hard drive does not contain any corporate information - same thing with photocopiers too

During the planning stage, what would be the recommended amount of time to act after losing communication with the person? I'd think the first day or two can be a leeway since they may have just wandered into a communication-blind-spot. Is the third day a good time to put your contingency plan into place, or should we act sooner or later? (Danni Zheng MGTC44)

Good question Danni, best answer is GO get them by the 3rd day (start journey to the site by Day 2) - 4 is too long if the person had a bad injury that required treatment - for example, if a broken leg is not treated in 48 hrs, not life threatening, but if skin is broken, infection can set in and 4 days could be fatal
