@loneazn808 Yes it does. It is 6 cents TO THE DOLLAR in 1900 versus 46 cents TO THE DOLLAR in 2009. If it didn't take into account inflation it would just say the average spent on X was 6 cents in 1900. The average spent today on X is 46 cents. The amount spent there is a proportionate amount, so even if you did adjust it today's dollar it would be the exact portion.

If 6 cents was worth 46 cents today that means the dollar back then would be worth roughly $8 dollars today (using your example). My point was how much the government has been growing without need.

Your example of 6 cents in 1900 compared to 42 cents today doesn't account for inflation. Im sure that 6 cents in the 1900s is worth somewhere around 46 cents in 2009. Just helping to clarify your argument. =)

I am a little sad with how our government has been growing over the last 100+ years. Our government went from taking 6 cents on every dollar earned in the early 1900s to approximately 42 cents on every dollar today. What has changed? I don't blame Obama, but we are currently headed in the wrong direction. I read a famous quote by Lincoln the other day; to paraphrase it, "the government is not meant for charity." A lot can be derived from this statement. Why is the government growing&spending?
