In a world where we are using Space Solar Power, there's nothing to stop you from putting solar panels on your roof. In fact, that's a good idea, IF you live in a sunny place and IF you have a good-sized roof.
If you live in a three-story apartment building in a cloudy place far north or south of the Equator, you're pretty much screwed.
Also, a factory uses a LOT of energy, and they probably can't get it all from solar panels on the factory roof. So something like SSP helps with that a lot.

It ain't mutually exclusive! The main issue though is to feed the entire worlds' rapidly growing energy demands without the need for massive solar farms which take up yet more valuable land space. This potentially solves both our energy and land issues.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to put the solar panels down here and "beam it" into our homes?

Read the report by the NSS that the Pentagon had them publish. It goes into technical detail about space based solar power.
I say it is a highly probably solution to our energy problems once the hurdles are overcome.
