Instructional video on how to play Dave Matthews Band song - Two Step. When i demonstrate the two shapes and show the difference between chord#1 and chord#2, it is to establish the finger positioning of each. The first position (which i show at the beginning of the video) of "chord#2/shape#2" is not actually used in the song but, rather than complicate things by moving the shape down a fret, i was trying to demonstrate the very simple difference between the two "shapes" themselves. Below is the tab for chord #2 (as i refer to it in the video). The first chord shown is an A#major and the second is a Cmajor (dave's versions of these).

e---x----x----
b---x----x----
g---7----9---
d---x----x----
a---5----7---
e---6----8---

Shape#1/Chord#1 is moved around a bit more (he uses it in 3 different spots) but the main one which places both ring and pinky fingers on fret 10 is a Dminor. With ring and pinky finger on 3, it is a Gminor and with ring and pinky finger on 5, it is an Aminor.

  • :52 you say you have your pinky behind all that on the D string on the 10th fret. isnt that called the G string?

  • it is the G, and I'm actually "G" at that time stamp. They are, after all, pretty phonetically similar.

  • at 1:06 when you say "taking your ring finger and swapping it with the index finger"

you dont even move your index finger so how can you say its swapping if it doesnt even move? im very confused. and what is your middle finger doing? it looks like your placing it on the low E string 9th fret. and even more confusing, it looks like your ring finger is going down and pressing the 9th fret of the G string where the pinky is already holding...makes no sense at all, can you explain?

  • you are correct, it is the middle finger which moves, not the index. The difference between the two chord shapes is that one is a minor (using a minor 3rd) and the other is a major (using a major 3rd). If my verbal mistake which mismatches the visual presentation confuses you, you might be better off looking at tab and then revisiting. I would caution you against holding my videos to a professional standard. They are meant to be helpful but are free and are certainly not perfect.

  • what is your guitar?
