Perdão in Portuguese is used more for other occasions such as when someone says something for example and you don't understand sort of like pardon me, the one you'd use more for I'm sorry as an apology is Desculpa (sorry) (Perdoa-me - forgive me) is more commonly used, Brasil also uses more I think - me desculpa (forgive me) not 100% sure though on that one

In Colombia we also use more "perdón" than "lo siento" And we use them exaclty as videocrack246 said

not really... at least in Mexico people say 'perdon' not 'lo siento'.
'lo siento' is very formal. in mexico, people only say 'lo siento' when we are talking to someone we respect OR when someone died...
