"We have a political debate, a foreign policy debate, in this country that is basically about some other planet from the one that we are talking about right now," says Leverett.
This is an excerpt from a Carnegie Council Global Policy Innovations event, "The Rise of the Rest," on July 1, 2008. For the full video, audio, and transcript, go to http://www.policyinnovations.org or http://www.carnegiecouncil.org

  • It can be deduced who Leverett is looking out for in this video. He's looking out for the globalists; the business owners and developing countries who will benefit the most from increased interdependence. Independence is a dirty word in a global economy because it is ,in my opinion, seen as a form of protectionism.

  • What's he's implicitly saying is that the current system is fine. No changes necessary. Westerners are just going to have to swollow higher hydrocarbons like anyone else. And things are just going to be just great.

He is implicity saying the energy markets are fine. Westerners must accept higher prices for hydrocarbons because there are no alternatives.

  • I think you need to read in between the lines a little bit. He has basically dismissed any attempt by any country in the West to become energy independent as foolish. What does that mean? That means he thinks green energy is rubbish and that the government needs to stop spending time and energy on it.

  • Does the Carnegie Council have any free marketers on this panel? I have not heard any one of them promote the proper role of Fed. Gov. in the area of energy policy; which is none! Get out of the way of energy producers and let the market work). Why does the Carnegie Cncl serve as a socialism apology group? What is wrong with freedom? Let's get real folks! We have a bloated and largly unconstitutional federal government. Chop the fat, balance the budget and produce our own energy!
