A group of approximately 100 former Nikko Electronics employees, retrenched in July 2008 picketed outside the Penang State Assembly building this morning. Their spokesman, Zahir Ismail told members of the press that they are desperately seeking help from the State Government as majority of the employees are women who are above 40 years old and are unable to find other jobs. Nikko Electronics closed down its operation in Prai in July 2008 without paying retrenchment benefits to the employees, neither was any notice given to the employees.

Although a Bernama report mentioned that Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said compensation is in store for all the 948 retrenched workers of the closed factory of Japanese wireless toy manufacturing company, these workers have failed to get anything until today.

Another report by Aliran said that the High Court announced that until the company completes its winding-up process, the talks on compensation could not take place.

Hence, these desperate workers put their hopes on the People Centric Penang State Government and decided to bring their plights to the Chief Minister who was at the State Assembly sitting.
