@gerardbedecarter both, I think!
The music has its own magic described as an characterization above and the interpreter should be able to create the atmosphere as a prescription.

Beautiful playing! [PS:Are indications descriptive or prescriptive?]

@gerardbedecarter They are guide-lines, but indications can never be 100% objective, if only because every era has its specific ideas about expression and every performer has a unique taste.

'Gesangvoll, mit innigster Empfindung'
Very interesting the italian subtitle as follows: 'Andante, molto cantabile ed espressivo'
The great Polish master takes care of the German 'tempo' indication and so the movement sounds more dolce than espressivo, very beautifully 'semplice' played, like a folk song,
Claudio Arrau would have considered the Italian description more important, 'espressivo',
but Beethoven would have been smiling if he had listened to Horszowski...I am sure! :-)

@berlinzerberus "Empfindung", another German word that is very difficult to translate... I think Horszowski's playing is sincere and simple, but at the same time profound and moving, even spiritual... I love his cantabile, especially in variation IV (starting at 6:05)... the pianissimi are out of this world!
