This is a very good recording. I find it fascinating that in the 1920s and 1930s there was a lot of transcribing for orchestra of baroque organ works. We all know abpout Stokowski but Dmitri Metropoulous, another conductor, transcribed another Bach piecde. Carlos Chavez orchestrated at least two Buxtehude pieces. The E minor Chaconne is probably the best of the whole lot. Why was there so much of this going on?

That is a truly masterful transcription!

I'd disagree with the above. I think Stokowski's Passacaglia and Fugue transcription is superb.

I know Schoenberg's one of those composers everyone likes to fight about, but let's just agree that this, at least, is a damn good piece of orchestral writing.

Wow! I need to buy this CD.

LOVE IT!
Schoenberg pulls out all the bells and whistles in this magnificently romantic interpretation of a famous Bach organ work. The finest modern orchestration of Bach, far surpassing Stokowski's transcriptions.

I can only wish Schoenberg had orchestrated more of Bach's organ music. Stokowski pales in comparison.
