Eighteenth in the Blue Square Conference Premier, Southport's part-timers twice came from behind to give Sheffield Wednesday a shock before the League One club's fitness and quality proved decisive. Paul Barratt, levelled for Southport after Gary Teale had given the visitors the lead. Barratt was by far Southport's best player and his goal was the first of six in an astonishing 12-minute spell. Neil Mellor made it 2-1 to the visitors before Matty McGinn, the Southport substitute, levelled with a sublime chip. Clinton Morrison netted twice in 60 seconds to take the tie out of Southport's sight before full-back Tommy Spurr fired into the top corner.

Manchester United have won the Cup the most times (11), followed by Arsenal (10) and Tottenham Hotspur (eight). Forty-two different clubs have won it.
