The footage of Theia striking the earth to create the moon is just breathtaking. If it weren't for that colossal event in our solar system - and with no moon - earth may never have developed intelligent life. The moon helps us keep the spin on our axis steady, and without it, there would be no tides, and the weather on the earth would be out of control.

@sadtraxx I guess your alternative explanation is something far more plausible and based on some sort of empirical data the rest of us have yet to see. Also, saying that the big bang happened by chance isn't the same thing as saying it came from nothing. Those are two very different statements. Science has given us a fairly good idea at how the universe as we know it today was formed but says nothing concerning why. Any larger purpose you attribute to life or the universe is simply your own.
