Porcupine Tree On Tour With The Incident [iPod Smashing]

During their tour stop in Portland, Oregon on September 16th, Porcupine Tree's frontman, Steven Wilson, quickly promotes their current "Incident Tour". What starts out as a simple promo turns into electronic death with my old iPod :D Colin Edwin, the bass player, filmed this as well. See zerralia's video response for her video of this event.

Steven is not raging against the iPod in and of itself, he's striking a symbolic blow towards the "mp3 style" of music that compromises the work and production that a band puts into an album (and its quality), and the "jukebox" mentality it promotes where people pick and choose certain songs to listen to, rather than listen to the album start to finish as it was meant to be listened to. That's it. You have to read between the lines and understand the underlying symbolism, my friend.

@Cassandrart I also have this extense collection myself! I use iTunes music store sometimes but just for that rare stuff I can´t find as CD! I also have a vinyl collection, I enjoy the way that it sounds! Wilson´s has OCD! ( JUST KIDDING OK!)

@barcigian I don't like buying mp3s either. I prefer buying the original CD (220 originals and counting) then convert it for my convenience. If he's so against people not listening to the whole album he can go ahead and also smash radios and singles of all kinds :P

just a symbolism against mp3 culture! I really don't like downloaded mp3's cuz they decrease the sound quality to make it smaller for distribution... What I do is to buy the original CD and make my own MP3 file with maximum quality I can cuz it's only for me and not to distribute =) Just to preserve my CD as NEW...

FWIW, sometimes "just the hits" is all you want/need. Sound of Muzak stands on its own. Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" does too. Need I mention Tom Sawyer or Limelight? Everything on Steely Dan's Aja stands on its own, but in its entirety each of these albums are brilliant. The iPod has given geeks like me (us) the ability to carry EVERYTHING. Quality's not great, but that's the trade off. Remember - music's a 2 party experience - artist and listener.
