  • Yes,this is marvelous.i first heard it on the first "A very Special Christmas" album, years ago,and loved it.I agree,i don't think she gets the attention she deserves for that fabulous rich and very expressive voice! Now I'm going to listen to it again!

  • I have just started to sing in a local choir hee in Cornwall, and its a very good version of a real bitter sweet number, Alison`s voice is well suited to it, she`s just brill, and very under valued, what a start.

  • This video is better than the other one I saw...no weird cartoony picture. That said, I absolutely love this song...though it is bittersweet when you listen to the lyrics. Miss Moyet's voice is a perfect fit for this song...thanks for posting this!

  • Though she is pretty good she isn't singing it in the original fashion, which is my favorite and is like 2 octaves higher.

  • My favorite christmas carol. But it's soooooo sad.

  • Hated the music

    Loved the voice

  • @jazzliscious13 I totally agree! Moreover, I have always adored this carol and , although I have heard plenty of other versions, this one here is for me the one and only ULTIMATE original.

It is so sad when you understand the lyrics and what all this is about - The slaughter of the innocent little boys, yet, at the same time, it is so hauntingly beautiful.

BTW, when you look at the music and listen to it, it resembles Polish Christmas carols-lullabies.

  • This reading of this Christmas classic is a FANTASTIC rendition of it, free of all the usual trappings of most modern versions like excessive embellishment and over-the-top rhythmic alteration and especially the post-Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey flourishes of arpeggios in the span of a quarter note. If all artists would treat classic traditional Christmas carols with the same dignity and soft touch that Alf does, I would not have to complain about the crappy modern versions of these songs.
