This games approach to learning technique is called by "Yakutian Hipsigami." I adapted some different wrestling traditions from a Russian team from Yakut (Northern Siberia) that I trained with in Moscow in 2004.
The goal is to try to get your opponent to touch anything to the mat besides his feet. It forces our wrestlers to "hand fight" with a purpose. It also forces them to be disciplined with what they do while hand fighting. It has been a great tool, along with live bouts trying to get "snatch singles," in helping our wrestlers develop very strong and functional position on their feet.
