And finally, Passage in the 1960's early 70's was a great flux of small town tensions, stunning harbour views, smells, sounds, round hills, neighbours, distinctive characters (Tom Fahey, Mick Dye and Jim Dye all RIP) to mention just a few , ambition, social stratification and no clue as to what might come wth EU membership. Like wealth a bank branch, penthouses, what next nutty appartment prices- surely not.. well not for a while again, anyway
BTW Father O Flynn is commemorated in bronze opposite the old primary school (whereI spent 3 years) and all I know is he gave me a lift in his great big Dodge into town when I was a small lad and I was so awed I just hopped in and was delighted to be given a lift
in a car by the man held in such great esteem, it' s one of my childhood's memorable moments. Fr O Flynn was a man of God but not a dogmatist - very human in hindssight and kindly at the time
Had to get out of Passage West in late 1960's thru circumstances outside my individual control. Hardest cocoon of a town ever to break away from. That town holds your childhood as hostage and i found it very hard to communicate at the adult level when I go back later. I was at an t-Athair O Floinns funeral as a kid with my dad. Canon Johnson of the COI parish was therer - great hat - nice man, rainy day.
thanks ozzie for al the info,i played hurley up there in '83 even played matches cant actually remember if I played for passage west itself, but I do remember playing matches that were refereed,so i guess they were teams from outside, many thanks again...........
