This video shows artist Tracey Cartledge making a mosaic stepping stone with one of her mosaic kits. You can see how to create the mosaic design and cast it into a stepping stone ready for the garden. For more information visit www.traceycartledge.co.uk

Although it looks fiddly in this old video - and it was!! - peeling off the vinyl is now MUCH easier because we worked with a vinyl manufacturer to test a whole range of vinyls with different levels of tack and found the best one for the job. The vinyl that we now use in the kits is strong enough to hold and lift the design but peels off really well too!!!

The paper - its a self-adhesive vinyl - is removed before the mortar sets because this ensures that mortar fills up between the pieces, where air pockets might otherwise form, and therefore there's no need to grout it later.

These kits are designed using an improvised method that makes the process a lot easier than traditional methods, especially for children and absolute beginners.
The design is placed on the top because the top surface is a bigger circle than the base and with this method you can smooth it out completely.

I don't understand why the sun design didn't go on the bottom, contact paper side down. I also don't understand why she peeled off the paper while it was still wet. Why not wait until the concrete is dry to remove it? it won't shift.

Since we made this little video on the village green, I have sourced a much better adhesive vinyl that goes into all our new improved mosaic stepping stone kits!!
The new sticky back plastic has enough tack to hold the pieces but releases much more readily.
You can see the new kits on my website.
