NOTE:
This is a cut down version of a 16 minute video; due to YouTube's 10 minute limit I had to leave out a lot of relevant details. I've applied to be a YouTube Partner so that I can upload longer videos, but it's unlikely that my application will be accepted anytime soon. So until then I apologize in advance for having to truncate my content.

Tutorial applies to the following computer:
12.1 Inch Apple iBook G4

Parts:
2x250mm CCFL Backlight Lamp (see link below)
http://www.lcdparts.net/ccfldetail.aspx?ProductCCFL=MS20250

Really, really small hex wrench
A similarly small flat head screwdriver
A slightly larger flat head screwdriver
A lot of patience

Tips:

  • What size of allen key is that?

  • @jaco1989 No idea, I'm sure ifixit would know.

  • Is it the same on powerbook 12"???i have the same problem i think!!!you are great!

  • The bulb (CCFL) length is critical. Since the difference is only 0.1 inches I would assume that it will work. If not you can look around on lcdparts and find one that's the right size.

  • I wondered if it would not have been possible to measure the voltage of the inverter's output jack with a multimeter before buying a backlight, etc.

  • Good point. That's what I get for assuming that it was just the backlight! It's also possible that both were blown, and I have no way of testing the CCFL so I'll never know. Luckily I am one of those crazy types who likes to take things apart just for fun.

  • did you fix the distributator thing yet?

  • Oh... And you shouldnt place a drink near a computer that you are working on!

  • A better way to test if it's the backlight or inverter is to get a multimeter and test for current coming out of the inverter. From my experience, liquid damage usually causes the inverter to go (not the backlight).

  • Women, can't drink milk can't kill em.

  • Yeah my girlfriend done the same thing except it wan't milk and I was with her and it did get over the computer screen....Hinted...Hint,hint. Hint!
