Due to the overwhelming demand for the RISE one night event in February, an Encore showing of the event has been added in select locations on Monday, March 7th.

The event will be broadcast to select movie theaters nationwide at 7:30 p.m. local time (Pre-show features will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of the event.)

U.S. Figure Skating and NCM Fathom are proud to release RISE, a special one-night Fathom Event celebrating American figure skating and commemorating the 50th anniversary and legacy of the 1961 U.S. World Team tragedy.

Hosted by Matt Lauer, Co-Anchor NBC News TODAY Show, the live event will include uniquely choreographed figure skating performances, interviews with American figure skating legends, the premiere of the cinematic feature RISE and more.

Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano and Michelle Kwan serve as storytellers in RISE. The five legendary skaters provide the narrative for the cinematic feature by relating the stories of some of the biggest names and moments in the history of the sport to those on the 1961 U.S. World Team who lost their lives in the crash of Sabena Airlines Flight 548 on its way to the World Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. RISE also features interviews with 2010 Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek, legendary coach Frank Carroll, and more.

Produced and directed by 16-time Emmy Award winners Lookalike Productions, RISE will take audiences on a powerful and uplifting journey through some of the biggest moments in the history of the sport. With the stories of the 1961 World Team at its center, RISE illustrates how the unfulfilled dreams of those who lost their lives on Flight 548 would be shared -- and forever realized -- by the generations of skaters that have followed.

Proceeds from RISE and the Feb. 17, 2011, event will be used to further the mission of U.S. Figure Skating's Memorial Fund, which was established Feb. 23, 1961, as a living tribute to those that lost their lives in the crash. The Memorial Fund awards approximately $300,000 annually in grants and scholarships to skaters, recognizing excellence both on and off the ice.

  • WOW!!!

  • Saw this Thursday nite in a very full theater. This movie was touching, funny and sad. And you don't have to be a skating "fanatic" to enjoy this film. The stories about the skaters were fascinating, especially Maribel Vinson-Owens and her two daughters. Glad to hear there is an encore performance in March. Can't wait till the DVD cones out!

  • I just returned from seeing Rise. It was such a wonderful experience. Thank you to everyone who had a part in putting this together.

  • Thanks for linking to my video! Glad to be connected to such a fine effort!! best wishes

  • Thank you for this! It gives us an idea of what we will be in for. I can't wait for it but OTOH, it will be a real emotional bender for me, and most of us.
