Each year the Office for Justice and Peace of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne conducts the Rerum Novarum Lecture to commemorated the great 1891 Encyclical of Pope Leo XII on the Rights of Workers. The Encyclical was the first encyclical of the Church in the modern era to discuss social issues and formed the basis for the Church Social Teaching. This year the Lecture was delivered by Joan Healy a sister of the Congregation of St Joseph of the Scared Heart (The Josephites), the order of nuns established by Mary MacKillop. This was a particular tribute to the canonisation of Australia's first saint, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
