@Earthlinked Parliment can only get rid of the royal family ONLY if the public want to get rid of them. And the queen can only get rid of the primeminister if the people demand it or they are showing traits of a dictator.
The monach controls the RAF and the Royal Navy the army is controlled by the government.

@anbr90 Like the other 2 said it adds height to the soldiers which is a form of mental warfare, and after the battle of waterloo the British adopted the hats after beating the Old guard known at the time as the best fighteres in the World. So after beating them Britain decided to pass on the title to its own troops and its a sign of respect to the French.

@Earthlinked Its not a free pay cheque, you're misinformed. King George was having trouble paying his bills and had racked up debt. While he did own huge tracts of land, the profit from their rental was too small to cover his expenses. He offered a deal to parliament: for the rest of his life he would surrender the profits from the rents on his land in exchange for getting a fixed annual salary and having his debts removed. The UK make an estimated £200 Million in revenue from this land a year.

May I ask a question: was the Queen amused seeing the french tricolore writen in the sky by those planes?

@mandeville7474 And Parlament has the power to dissolve the Queenof all powers - TEHY are elected - SHE is not!!!!! So it is a stalemate she will NEVER do anything - or she may loose her FREE paycheck every week!!!!!!!!!
-
@Earthlinked She has the power to dissolve parliament, fire the primeminister, sell the navy (she own's it).She fired the primeminister of Australia in 1974.She is the commander-in-chief of the military.

@anbr90 A carry on from the Battle of Waterloo. British Guardsmen, after the battle, took the hats off the dead and dying French Grenadiers/Guardsmen and wore them while chasing the rest of the routed French from the field.
-
@anbr90 I assume you are referring to the bearskins, and I believe they were used on the battlefield just to add an extra bit of height to the soldiers making them more imposing on the battlefield. Also the fact they are made of fur probably helped to keep the soldiers warm :)

really beautiful.
but as an outsider, what is the purpose of those helmets? not to be disrespectful at all, but they do not seem practical for battle, the soldier would have trouble seeing and to be able to move quick and they don't really seem to have a purpose other than looking cool. I understand it's a tradition but there must be a reason for them to look like that?
Magnificent! So proud to be British!
