2010/11 Premier's Awards Regional Finalist -- Lower Mainland
Category: Innovation

If we want individuals and families to move to, remain in and invest in B.C.'s communities and economy, we need to ensure they feel a sense of belonging and attachment. The Welcoming & Inclusive Communities Initiative gives communities the tools to leverage the growing diversity of their citizens. This innovative initiative, the first of its kind in the world, takes a bottom-up approach and recognizes that communities are best positioned to address local issues. Collaboration with new partners is a key focus, bringing together First Nations, immigrants, municipal governments, school districts, seniors, faith groups, youth, non-profits and others.

From workplace tours for newcomers in Burnaby to Port Alberni where the superintendent of school district #70 proposed a policy to make anti-racism education mandatory, this initiative is reaching communities throughout the province.
