The founders of The Hersha Group of Companies this fall will receive the United Way's highest honor for volunteers nationwide.
Hasu P. and Hersha H. Shah, of Camp Hill, are the first area residents to receive the 2010 National United Way Tocqueville Society Award, according to the United Way of the Capital Region.
Harrisburg-based The Hersha Group of Companies is a real estate investment trust with a portfolio of 78 properties. Hasu Shah is CEO of the firm.
The couple has donated time and money to numerous organizations, including:
•Being one of the first two couples to donate $100,000 annually to the United Way of the Capital Region.
•Establishing and endowing the Hersha H. and Hasu P. Shah Program of Hospitality and Lodging Management at Harrisburg Area Community College.
•Founding the Shree Krishna Foundation, which helps provide eyesight to India's blind and disadvantaged, and helping create the Human Enrichment by Love and Peace (H.E.L.P.), an international disaster and medical relief organization.
"It's rare to meet people who have made such a positive impact right here in the Capital Region and in communities around the world," said Joseph M. Capita, president and CEO of the United Way of the Capital Region, in a statement. "The ripple effect of their generosity will continue for decades. They exemplify what it means to be living legacies."
