Am I to presume that you are some scholar of Hebrew, modern or otherwise? If so, please cite for me your scholarly works on the topic so that I might broaden my mind; if not, then how do you make such a claim? Do you even read Hebrew fluently? What about "original" Hebrew?

If you look at the original Hebrew in which this part of the Bible was written the text actually says something along the lines of this, "dying you shall surely die." I'm not joking. In other words what the original text was saying is that the moment Adam and Eve ate of the fruit their bodies would begin to die leading to the ultimate death of each of them. On a side note, if you think about it, we are both dying right now. Our bodies aren't immortal, and we are slowly dying.

"Because if you're dealing with somebody who has the sort of mentality which likes leaving hats on the pavement with bricks under them you know perfectly well they won't give up. They'll get you in the end."

Hmm... this seems like a perfect opportynity to throw in a Douglas Adams quote, from The restaurant at the end of the universe; "Your God person puts an apple tree in the middle of a garden and says do what you like guys, oh, but don't eat the apple. Surprise surprise, they eat it and he leaps out from behind a bush shouting `Gotcha'. It wouldn't have made any difference if they hadn't eaten it."
"Why not?"
God didn't lie to Adam and Eve. He didn't say they would die that day. He said that if Adam and Eve ate the fruit they would surely die. As far as I know Adam and Eve aren't around anymore, they are dead. So....I guess that means God was right when He said they would die.
Of course, you can choose to disbelieve in the Bible's account of creation altogether; my point is only that within the context of the account, God didn't lie.
