For many countries economic growth depends heavily on consumer spending, on Thursday official figures have been released showing consumer confidence in the Eurozone has fallen to its lowest level for 15 years. In Britain, where consumer confidence is also weak, a new shopping mall, the biggest in Europe, has just opened opened its doors for the first time. A huge mistake? Or a good bet that Britain's economy, which is heading into recession will bounce back? Al Jazeeras Jonah Hull went shopping to find out.

  • lifes going to end for everyone one day

so why not make use of it and spend :] yay for westfield haha

  • ive only worked 3 weeks in all my life and that was in 1982.

if i took a job i'd be worse off as wages couldnt match the benefits i claim.

it's bad enough already scraping by on only £580 per week and that has to keep me, my wife and 4 kids.

  • wow thats jsut another scum of the earth comment

you sitting on your arse doing nothing wont help

    especially if your claiming benfits.

  • im welcoming this recession as i aint got a job and cant be pressured into work if there aint any jobs about.

  • The fact is, it will. This is not the first nor last economic crisis. You already know the history.

Besides, this is about people spending their disposable income - not about the modern international monetary system.

The most concise way to explain things here in this limited amount of space is: no one gets paid until something is sold.

Yes, saving a portion of income is of the utmost importance. But spending is what keeps any economy going.

  • It will help PEOPLE, do you realize the crap you buy, 98% of the time is NOT British? Nor is is manufactured in Britain.

And keep your macro and your micro, in fact you should of pointed out that all and every monetary system that has been set up EVER, that was not based on gold has FAILED, why is ours different? Because we invented INVISIBLE money? E.g credit, because we can get loans and credit cards, so now the burden is on YOU to tell US how this economy can survive this illusory money.

  • So you didn't read my post. I did not advocate overspending and going into debt. Maybe you have that vice yourself.

But hording money does not help any economy. And I don't need to demonstrate you how an economy is helped by people a portion of their disposable income.

On the other hand, please tell me how hording money and not spending on anything helps an economy? Now that is what I am curious to know. The burden is on you because it goes contrary to all macro & micro economic sense.

  • LOL...were do you think the american culture spawned from...europe lol...america and europe are like realatives...sisters...

americans are brainwashed to spend...spend..spend...in order for the machine to function..debt must be created..

  • Do you?

Tell me how spending helps? Hmmm, or is it just a way for them to keep control over you?

Think REAL hard and tell me the WHOLE monetary system isn't a massive joke. A lie, a promise of wealth and power for those who want it, at the expense (ALWAYS) of someone else, get fucking real...... Money = debt

  • Conspiracy theorist, eh?

I did not state that I am for overspending. But not spending is even worse. What is the point of hording money and being miserly? Do you have any idea how economies work?
