Eugene Shoemaker and his theory about Earth being hit by impacting bodies throughout its long history.
Ever since he witnessed blasting of an under ground neuclear explosion that created a giant crater, he came to the conclusion that many scars here on Earth including Arizona crater was infact created by impacting asteroids not a volcanic eruptions as was widely accepted in the time. his attention was on the Moon and he was the first to prove that lunar craters are impacting craters. he became Gelogist advisor to the Apollo Astronanuts during the 70's. He along with His wife Caroline and their co worker David Levy discovered the comet Shoemaker - Leviy 9 that hit Jupiter in July 1994, proving his impacting theory. since then it was discovered that thousands of Asteroids criss crossign planet Earth orbit, many of them that hit Earth in the past and certainly will hit us again, all we have to do is to search for them and calculate their trajectories so that something can be done to prevent them surprising us and causing mass exinctions the way they did to the Dinosaurs 65 millions years ago.

I always get a wistful feeling when I see this. Gene was a great guy and I miss his enthusiasm.
