With newspaper readership and circulation continuing to drop, more and more newspapers are being forced out of business. However, as John Whitehead reminds viewers in this weeks vodcast, we must all do our part to preserve this important forum, because local newspapers are the clarion call of democracy.

  • Why do you think the online competitors with well-known papers are putting them out of business? Because they know the secrets and can adapt! Now, if all those newspapers could get in on it and take these secrets and tricks to heart, they too could become profitable again and survive while transitioning to online. It's absurd to think our local newspapers can't adapt but OTHER newbies can. come on now

  • And it's not like these 'local newspapers' can't make the transition to Internet and adapt. I mean, we didn't bail out the horse and buggy when cars came along. We didn't bail out kerosene producers or distributors when the lightbulb was invented. So why newspapers? It's absurd to think that they can't possibly compete and need gov't backing. If any industry needs gov't backing to stay alive, it's better off just failing. It's not worth it.

  • I think the attempts to change failing newspapers into "nonprofits", like Ben Cardin proposed, or bailing them out, is misguided. I understand Whitehead's point, but I still think it's kind of misguided. I mean, it's not like most people REALLY care that much about local politics. In comparison with how many people care about national politics, state and local is a relative handful. So local newspapers, I doubt, have really ever been "the basis of democracy."

  • I woud love to support my local news paper's and TV stations, but they are all owned by the same people and are only giving me half truths.they are told what they can write.

  • First time i've heard you tell us to take a pro active stance.well sort of. But i agree with your message.

    it's time people,lets' do this.

  • excellent
