this is ww1 not ww2
and every side used in ww1 pretty inhuman weapons and tactics
and the americans used in ww2 atomic bombs against civillians
thats also pretty ruthless
i could list some more things like argentinia and chile and so on but you would probably not listen

fighting infantry on the frontline is a different thing

They were forbidden to shoot at ground personnel, you say. Yet, they surely attacked ground troops.
Unless you mean, they were not allowed to fire at downed pilots.
Anyway, I wonder how could such a rule be enforced.

all you've missed in the first 5 minutes is the American chaps leaving the US to make their way to France. Nothing majorly important to the story apart from some character introduction. Wikipedia will fill in the gaps.
