Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.

Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

  • Just want to let you know that the sound on these are not done so well. I saw this and let me tell you it sounded way more louder and powerful. Not quite as bla as listening to the clips on here. Sorry. Never the less I am enjoying these anyway because I JUST LOVE LINDA!

  • Linda's voice is not NEARLY as resonant as Rex's.

His is so SOO resonant. Beautiful. He is bel canto.

  • You never expect a song with the lyircs "fa-la-la-la" to be so beautiful. I'm doing "Pirates" in May, and I envy our Frederic for being able to sing this song. I'm the Pirate King and this is just a little bit out of my range.

  • I wonder if Lady Gagme would be able to pull this off? I think not

  • I agree, Bionic. Not bad for a former teen idol, huh? Voice as clear as a bell. And Rex didn't do too badly after "Pirates," either.

  • Oh yeah... one more thing... from 2:13-2:30... GAWD!! Then I just freaking MELT at 2:31 when he says "aaahhh"...

    WOW! I love his voice!

  • Hey ThePenzancePirate!

I just wanted to thank you for posting this!. I've been inlove with the movie/musical since I was a little kid but seeing THEM do it on stage.... I'm blown away!

    So... THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • One of my favorite parts in this musical is when Rex Smith completely drops the tune and just whispers "He loves thee." It's just so unexpected and heartfelt and beautiful. Perhaps a random bit to pick, but it stands out from the farcical nature of the rest of the production.

  • She's really pretty
