when you said "delet one node of the square" you just clicked. but you did not say what tool to select and then while clicking do I have to press any key such as Control or shift?

When I try to do this, I get stuck if i copy the arrow. when I do this, and place it above the other arrow, there is a space of white, that will cover the most under arrow.

How did you do the delete part? When I select it and press 'delete' , the line splits in two :/

@barnamah select the square and then click on "object to path" from path menu. This will show the nodes. Select the second tool from the left toolbar. Click on the node to be deleted and press the delete button.

Thanks very much, that's helped me do what I wanted much easier than what I would have done otherwise, which would have involved much inaccurate moving of nodes

Creating an arrow directly using the Pen tool is an option, if you want to get some organic and asymmetric looking arrows. :)
