The Cello Concerto No. 1 in E Flat Major, Opus 107, was written by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1959. He wrote it for Mstislav Rostropovich, who memorized the work in four days and gave the premiere in Leningrad under Yevgeny Mravinsky, on October 9, 1959 in the Large Hall of the Leningrad Conservatory. The first recording was made for the CBS label by Rostropovich accompanied by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy in November of the same year.

  • "[Shostakovich] gave me the score of his first Cello Concerto, and in four days I memorized it and played it for him while he accompanied me on piano. We were so happy, we drank a little vodka together. We then played it again, not so perfectly, and drank more vodka. The third time I think I played the Saint-Saens Concerto while he accompanied his own concerto. We were very happy." -Mstistlav Rostropovich, RIP

  • Shostakovich is a GENIUS!

It's amazing to see how he wrote Eb major in such a dark way, but not destroying the tonality of the key overall.

There's no composer after him can be compared. Shostakovich seriously brought us to the highest point of 20th century atonal music :)

  • Probably my favorite concerto ever! (: Just some style to it... catchy... XD

  • This concerto was made for Rostropovich! Brilliant performance!! Nobody plays the Shostakovich concerto like Mstislav Rostropovich!

    Sincerely,

    Emil & Dariel Liakhovetski

  • Ormandy is great with those tempo changes and sectional characterization, with R in alignment.

  • Sounds like the Black Death.....I LOVE SHOSTAKOVICH.

  • Pity the owner of this channel agrees to having crappy adverts at the beginning of this wonderful piece of music. I feel dirty watching this, which is a bad way to start. Down with slutty advertising whores: say 'no' to adverts.

  • @gpahdnon I just love it when I get replies to more than 2 years old comments of mine :D

  • Great Rostropovich was a (great too) Shostakovich's friend. This one composed this beautiful cello concerto with the idea to play it at cello solo his friend.

  • @dlo693 hey I totally agree with you, I enjoy them as well. I was just trying to explain what that other guy wrote.

  • @gpahdnon "Sick" is actually what I thought upon hearing this too, I've never thought to describe a classical piece with that term.

  • Oh man, I wish I could play this on the my cello. It will take me years for me to master it though. I don't see why I shouldn't try.

  • @Ihavenicesocks Can't we all just enjoy all of the classical composers? I'm a big fan of Bach and Mozart, even though I know they're the most well-known (if not only-known) composers in the US pop culture, but at least it's nice to know that only a good handful of people all around the world can really understand their compositions as well as the other great composers after them.

  • Funny, I was just recently reading liner notes of Rostropovich being interviewed about him recording the Bach Cello Suites and how it mentioned "who else other than Rostropovich could have harvested such gritty, monumental masterpieces as... Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto [?] " Such epic music, it sounds like it's telling a story of such suspense and drama :)

  • @Gus19497 not cool man..

  • Very, very intense.

  • I love this...with all my heart is so b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l.!!!

  • I die again and again when I hear anything Shostakovich. All that passion is completely heartstopping. *_*

  • I had the great pleasure of hearing MR in person playing with the the San Francisco Symphony (quite a few years ago). I was sitting in the second row, and I will NEVER forget the thrilling energy of his playing. A consummate artist. I just read his comment--presented with brand-new piece, memorized and performed for composer just FOUR DAYS later. WOW!

  • @Ihavenicesocks Oh, Okay then. ^^ Sorry, for the misunderstanding.

    I get it now.
