@hebneh It still means both in both places. Eastern North Carolina it is still a dance & looks nothing like this demo from some 70-something years ago. In fact it is a -hugely popular dance in Eastern NC. There are even Shag festivals (the dance sort, not the British meaning). ;0)
I can sum this up easily: "Hop, hop, quick, quick. Again."
Then, "Slow, slow, quick, quick. Again."
And then you too can put on a mass Shag demonstration at the Lido Country Club.
P.S. It should be pointed out that the word "shag" at this time, in the USA, had that completely innocuous meaning of this type of dance. However, in Britain, it already meant "to have sex with", a definition that's known in America today.
Hmmmm, not quite what I would like to learn!! But so sweet, isn't it?

Oh & it's danced to "Beach Music" in North Carolina. A who different genre than "The Beach Boys".....
I suppose upon closer examination, it does look like a similar variation to what they are doing later in the video..... but still quite different!
