The famed American architect, I.M. Pei has designed another masterpiece among his many accomplishments. Many know Mr. Pei as a designer of the glass pyramid in the Louvre, Paris. At the direction of the Qatar government, Mr. Pei has designed this new Islamic Museum located on a specially made island off the Corniche in Doha.
Mr. Pei has told interviewers that he got his inspiration for this design by touring Morocco, Tunisia and other parts of great Islamic architecture. If I remember right, this design is close reflection of a mosque in Morocco; but I may be wrong.
In any event, it is a spectacular building from the outside and inside. The artifacts displayed inside are just as magnificent. They are from the collection of the Qatar Government and the personal collection of the Emir of Qatar. It was opened by the Emir in Dec 2008 amidst a lavish ceremony.
This museum being in Qatar is free and the museum has made a latest state of the art, touch screen, tour guide - while limited currently is still an excellent device to learn a little about the museum and its art work. And this audio/visual guide is free.
Besides everything being extremely beautifully done, it also has an excellent shop where you can buy some real quality products. The only thing missing is a nice restaurant or a cafeteria to rest your feet.
Awesome. I can't wait till they finish building up the other buildings.
