Some things may be misleading but to my ears the UAD sounds snappier.However i find the Waves version more natural sounding overall.Don't know which one sits closer to a real 1176 though...
@gerudobombshell actually you cant use the same settings on both. I own the Waves Mercury Bundle, and a UAD Quad Satellite drive, and the settings react differently because each set of plugs have different gain callibration. So in order to get the same level and amount of compression from each plug the settings HAVE to be different. Get your facts before you mouth off to a dude who's trying to be helpful to people like you who don't have Waves or UA plug-ins.
