www.ecomodder.com - Ever wondered how those Prius drivers get such great fuel economy? Part of the reason is a technique called pulse and glide, which we get in depth with in this video by Darin Cosgrove of EcoModder.com and Doc Willie

  • @Ichristian96 It's called, "Overtaking" no one keeps you behind a slow car against your will.

  • I HATE when people drive like this. Sure, do this when your the only one on the road. But not with people behind you.

  • @cpliu -On battery staus and set off speed and where the gaspedel is located pressed and depressed and on bit some=Neutral.. no gear shifting

  • @0160n palladio

  • who knows the SONG which plays beginning of the video??????????????????

  • That's what 'pulse and glide' is? All this time, I thought it was some advanced hypermiling technique, but it's basically what I do in my CRV.

Of course, except my CRV is a baby gas guzzler and it's engine doesn't turn off mid-drive.

  • Does Prius actually goes to neutral gear when you coast? I still feel the drag. If you switch it to N, it usually glides faster. I noticed though sometimes it shows no use of gas but sometimes it still uses gas. How does it decide whether to use gas?

  • gotta love the united federation of planets logo on the hood

  • I try to use similar techniques in my gas car, but it doesn't work unless you turn off the engine each time, then you are wearing on the starter.

It seems like this technique would be very good for approaching signal lights, etc., so as not to anger following drivers too much.

  • I do this in my gas Jetta. The problem, like some posters have addressed, is the traffic behind you. I err on the side of doing it in moderation. Coming home late last night, I have no problems accelerating to 55 and coasting to 30 in order to turn onto my street without touching the brakes, but I would never do that in heavy traffic. My pulse and glide is done between 40 and 45, or 45 and 50. 20 and 37 like this dude does is, in my mind, creating more problems in traffic.
