"Cold Turkey" is a song written by John Lennon, and recorded by The Plastic Ono Band. Its first public performance was recorded and released on the Live Peace In Toronto 1969 album by The Plastic Ono Band which included Lennon (vocal, guitar), Eric Clapton (lead guitar), Klaus Voormann (bass), Alan White (drums) and additional vocalizing by Yoko Ono. Yoko introduced it as the newest song written by John; John added that the band had never played the song together as a group before.
The song was released as a single in October 1969, and was John Lennon's second solo single ("Give Peace a Chance" being the first). According to Peter Brown in his book The Love You Make, the song was written in a "creative outburst" following Lennon and Ono going "cold turkey" from their brief heroin addictions.[1] Brown also states that Lennon presented the song to Paul McCartney as a potential single by The Beatles, but was refused and released it as a Plastic Ono Band single with sole writing credits to him.[1]
"Cold Turkey" was the first song John Lennon wrote for which he took sole credit; his previous compositions, including his first single release, "Give Peace a Chance",[2] were attributed to the Lennon/McCartney partnership. ("Give Peace a Chance" was later changed to give Lennon sole credit.[3]) Besides Lennon, this recording features Eric Clapton on lead guitar, Klaus Voormann on bass and Ringo Starr on drums. It was recorded in Abbey Road Studio 2.
In 1969 Lennon returned his MBE to Buckingham Palace saying "I am returning this MBE in protest against Britains involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam, and against Cold Turkey slipping down the charts. With love, John Lennon of Bag." [4]
John Lennon would perform this song, along with "Don't Worry Kyoko", live at the Lyceum Ballroom with George Harrison, Keith Moon, Eric Clapton, and others. This would be Lennon's last live performance with any of the other Beatles and this version would be available on his Some Time in New York City album.
The song's first appearance on a Lennon album was the 1975 compilation Shaved Fish.
In March 2005, Q magazine placed "Cold Turkey" at number 74 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.

  • WTF?? John loved her blindly!

  • @BeatlEPMJo john said if you dont understand her you dont understand him.

  • Has Kyoko ever had anything to say about this - er - "song"?

  • @byrdsmaniac

    she understand her mother's pain.

  • I remember playing this song on the jukebox at the Tachikawa Air Base in 1969/70 to irritate people. So nice to reconnect as an adult and appreciate the defiance and courage of this anti-war generation. Hats off to Yoko Ono and the Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band. Fond memories, and rich history continued!

  • yOKO IS so annoying.. her art is to irritate people.. i just wish i can give her a very hard kick in the ass.. that would artsy too.. maybe she should an art manifestation like that...in a museum, she is just there and people came in and kick her in the butt

  • @CommonSenseFitness YOU JUST GAVE ME A GOOD IDEA!!! keep in touch!!!

  • anyone have the lyrics to this song? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Would love to sing this in a karaoke bar.

  • What piece is this? This isn't the "Don't Worry Kyoko" that was included on the album, right?

  • @Svperstarr LOL, but if she was talentless, she wouldn't be in museums.

  • @FlashJJ1971 "Rioting" is not necessarily bad. Igor Stravinsky wrote "The Rites of Spring", which has become a classic of modern classcal music. The audience rioted upon hearing the first performance, and many orchestra members, and Stravinsky, had to jump out of windows in the back of the concert hall to prevent being mobbed. There are many other instances. So it's not necessarily bad, even if they DO "riot".

  • To YokoOnoDefense: first, THANK YOU for having such a great screen name. Second, THANK YOU for your advocacy of one of the coolest artists of rock. Third, THANK YOU for your courage in advocating. YOKO OWNS!

  • For the life of me, I can't understand how fans at this concert didn't riot while listening to this, hmm, performance.
