The throttle is jammed wide open in run 8! EJ&E SD38 #654 (one of four J-Ball locomotives), EJ&E SD38-2 #661 and EJ&E SD38-2 #656 head east through Frankfort, IL., on the EJ&E Eastern Subdivision. The three EJ&E's are leading a State Line coal train that came off of the EJ&E Western Subdivision. There's no better sound than a Leslie RS3L and three EJ&E's in run 8!

Filmed on January 13th, 2008.

  • Nick: Back in the day, it was one thing to hear the horn, but when I could hear the engine roar like this, I cannot tell you how many times I literally sprinted out the back door of my grandparents' house and run the 2 blocks to get to the Euclid Ave. crossing to get there before the engine approached. Half the time, when the train was westbound, the gates were already down when I got to Euclid Ave., but could still approach the gates in time to watch the engine cross. Good times.

  • They may sound good outside but inside the cab it hurts the crews ears badly. I have rode in numerous GP38-2s on Norfolk Southern road freights and wondered why was my engineer assigned a GP38-2 with a C40-9W trailing? In old power we have to wear ear plugs and its very uncomfortable.

  • Great sound!

Not enough locomotives for the weight/grade?

But less locomotives working harder is more efficient and less costly than more.

Glad you got out of your car.

    Nice steady video.

    Thank you.

  • They sound like they need a vacation.......

  • Wow... what a sound! I used to watch 4-unit sets of LLPX GP38-2's battle grades on the St. Lawrence & Atlantic RR, but they weren't as throaty as this!

  • I agree, great sound!
