The seemingly rough treatment by the "aunties" makes sense. Only the mother KNOWS, at ALL times, her baby is always under or around her; hence her gentle steps, in all directions. With the other adult elephants in the group, who're not nursing & could afford to be less watchful, they could easily/accidentally crush the babies, since they can't see behind them. Hence, the rough shoving, if a baby's too close to their blind spot, hind legs. That makes total intelligent sense, to THEM.
