@kanwarjit1000 A Google search of Shyam Kumar's (villain/singer) biography shows that he continued his acting career in Indian films during sixties, seventies and even appeared in a movie Geraftaar in 1985. Therefore, the presumption that he migrated to Pakistan is not correct.
@kanwarjit1000 If you are Indian then you can purchase these books: (1) Meena Bazar, published by Rajkamal Prakashan 1962 from New Delhi. This book is printed in Devnagri script and contains Manto's sketches on various characters he met during his career in Bombay film industry from 1942-1947. (2) Stars from Another Sky. This is English translation of Manto's articles, more or less the same as in Meena Bazar. Manto's short story about a mad Sikh character is titled " Toba Tek Singh".
Thanks sir, now I've the correct info. One Shyam(Kumar) sang for the other Shyam , is also new information for me. Where can I get those Manto articles? As a child, I read some short stories of Manto, which left an indelible mark on me. One had a Sikh character, emitting " ....moong di daal of the ..............& the ...................government"!
@kanwarjit1000 Yes, there were two Shyams. Manto's story is about his friend Shyam seen in this clip. He fell from horseback and died during shooting of film Shabistan probably in 1949 or 1950. Before he died, he visited Lahore along with Om Paraksh (the comedian) and met with Manto. All these details are given in Manto's article on Shyam. The other Shyam was a Muslim and migrated to Pakistan. He was a villain and a singer also. Two songs of film Dillagi are sung by this other Shyam.
@orientlover1 Sir, there were two Shyams in the movie. Your information is valid for the Shyam who is not the singer in this clip. The Shyam in this clip, died very young, of a fall from a horse during filming of a scene, whereas, the other Shyam went to live in Pakistan.
Saadat Hassan Manto, the famous Urdu short story writer, was a close friend of Shyam. In his book Ganje Farishte (Bald Angels) in an article on Shyam titled "Murli ki Dhun" he recounts how once at mid night, he (Manto), Shyam and two others got drunk and started running bare footed on deserted roads of Pune. One of them clinked bells at every temple on the way, the rest went down on knees put their foreheads on ground crying Shiv shambho, Shiv shambho while sleepy pujaris came out surprised.
Shyam the actor seen here, was a native of Rawalpindi. He married a woman from Lahore named Mumtaz Qureshi ( nick name Taji). He had two children with this woman. His daughter Sahira Kazmi is former Pakistani TV actress and producer. The other was a son. Famous Urdu short story writer Saadat Hassan Manto was a close friend of Shyam. He has written a 32-page sketch on Shyam in his book Ganje Farishte ( Bald Angels). This book contains articles on various film celebrities of Bombay during 1940's.
