USMLE Study Songs and USMLEntertainment are my Step 1 series. In this series, Substance P presents a brief video review of a pertinent medical topic and writes an accompanying song. The song appears as a "response" to this video (or vice versa). See my YouTube home page for my disclaimer, and please visit my website.

  • Hey man,

your idea of combining music with learning is really great. I have always wonder why remembering music songs ,in my case, is much easier than learning or why remembering other stuff is easier. Anyway thanks for what you doing. And I Have a question for you why do you call yourself Substance P ???

    - EL DANO

  • Substance P is a neuromodulatory transmitter. There's a P somewhere in my real name, and I loved the sound of "Substance P." It's badass.

  • Read an interesting article today. It was a case-control study that showed that increased IV rates are NOT associated with cerebral edema. Nonetheless, cerebral edema is a real and dangerous possibility in DKA.

The article's Pubmed citation is as follows: Ann Emerg Med. 2008 Jul;52(1):69-75.e1. Epub 2008 Apr 3.

  • And coming out of DKA really does feel like a rescue from pain- I felt a zillion times better, even though I still hurt.

Some type 2s can go into DKA, generally those with low cpeptides- 5% of DKA cases are in non-type 1s. I think it was somewhat cruel, but even in DKA my doctors said maybe type 2.

And on the topic of other diabetics going into DKA, pregnant women can go into DKA too, which is generally a big problem for mother and child.

Other forms of ketoacidosis happen minus hyperglycemia

  • Thanks for all the clarifications. My song is mostly a simplified condensed summary of type 1 DM and DKA, and I think it is good to remember that the presentation of DKA is never classic. But we must learn the classic presentation first before learning all the exceptions...
