I am a 26 year old African American man and I love Paul Robeson. He is my absolute favorite person of all times. I know he was just a man, but he was the greatest man I have ever had the pleasure of learning about. He was a singer, an actor, an all-American athlete, an intellectual,a lawyer, and a civil rights activist; he did all this as the son of a slave...my God! The courage, will power, talent, humility, confidence, conviction, and power of this man is unmatched. He's my hero!

@TypOgraphic - Paul Robeson is an example, for all humankind, of the greatness of good character. He is purity and perfection. His magnificent voice is ethereal and true! You have selected a perfect human to emulate!

Absolutely wonderful and I have had the good fortune to have met the great man personally in 1957 at Grosvenor Hall, Belfast. Some enduring experience.

Exquisite, thank you for sharing, can anyone tell me what key he is singing in?

CAN WE escape it, children in the choir of the living?...That "home"- the sacred dream of the human- is, and always has been, Freedom. How the experiences of the Middle Passage and centuries of slavery and injustice can be transformed at last into a rendition of beauty by such a voice is an immortal testament to the power of redemption. There is hope for the human species on this planet of a minor star in a minor galaxy among a hundred billion others. Out there somewhere is Home.

That bust of him--it's magnificent! Would love to own that!

@racourdav Think you'd have to stand in a very long line! I don't know where it's located. When I find out, I'll let you know. Thanks so much for your comment.

I was 10 when he died and I remember the Michigan Chronicle had a huge picture of his face on the cover and the somber news that he had passed. I knew a little bit about him then because of a teacher I had who taught us all about important and famous black people all year long. As I got older and learned more about him, I thought he was extraordinarily brave, handsome and oh what a voice!

Magnificent. So sad that we treated him so badly. I used to live in Carlisle, PA. The father of a Jewish woman I knew there had once--in the '40s, I think--arranged for Robeson to give a concert in the nearby state capital, Harrisburg. Mr. Hertzberg, an invalid, couldn't attend himself. When Mr. Robeson heard about it, he had someone drive him to Carlisle after the concert and re-sang the whole thing to Mr. Hertzberg. He had to stand back at the door of the little house, his voice was so big!

@mhpros I'm elated, but not surprised by your information! Over the years I've heard of many selfless acts by this genius. I think we're all just a little bit better for having shared some time on this planet with him. I'm really grateful to hear from you! Best regards!
