Djulukpirri is an accomplished didgeridoo player of the wuyimbarl style endemic to north-central Arnhem Land. He is a Djinang-speaking man of the Wurrkiganydjarr people whose homeland is at Galadjapiny, an outstation of Ramingining.

This is the first video on YouTube showing a close-up of a wuyimbarl player.

Djinang is sometimes referred to as a dialect of Yolngu Matha. However, most speakers of Yolngu Matha living in eastern Arnhem Land do not understand Djinang as the vocabulary and sounds of Djinang are quite different to Gupapuyngu and Gumatj for example. Djinang-speaking people refer to themselves as 'Yol' as opposed to 'Yolngu' in eastern Arnhem Land.

There are Dhuwa and Yirritja dialects of Djinang. Some Yirritja clans that speak Djinang are the Mildjingi, Djardiwitji, and Barlmbi. Dhuwa clans that speak Djinang are the Murrungun, Daymirringu, and the Wurrkiganydjarr/Marrangu.

Djulukpirri is in his mid 30s and a highly skilled wuyimbarl player... among the best of this style. The instrument he is playing is also a high quality instrument, a wuyimbarl that has enjoyed community use. What you hear in this clip is typical of the best wuyimbarl playing you will find in north-central Arnhem Land. The rhythms played by Djulukpirri sound deceptively easy compared to eastern Arnhem Land syncopations, but are in fact quite difficult to get right. Try it yourself!

  • I wish I could speak Yolngu Matha cuz I heard that in order to play the didge real good, you have speak in an aboriginal language while blowing.

  • Not really, strictly speaking - pardon the pun. It does involve a LOT of practice though just like anything else.

  • please no racism :) support only :)

  • it is sad that abos are subjects in their own homeland. Australians are the niggers of the english speaking world and they have no right to basically enslave the aboriginal tribes like this. Fuck australians are pretty much the biggest scumbags in the anglosphere they have no redeeming virtues. I hope there is a race war over there where the abos come out on top

Pappu Saeen Dhol Player is a remnant of the ancient Pakistani dravidian.

  • A lot of people from certain castes in Pakistan look just like him.
