A teenager received the maximum sentence on Friday for stabbing another boy in the heart last summer.
Tanner Chaboyer, 14, was stabbed on Aug. 11 in downtown Red Deer and was hospitalized for four months after suffering extensive injuries including brain injuries when his heart stopped.
The 16-year-old culprit will spend another year in custody, followed by eight months of supervised open custody, Red Deer youth court Judge Monica Bast ruled during a sentence hearing. The maximum sentence is two years under the act.
The accused, who cant be identified under terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, showed no emotion when Bast announced her sentence.
The sentence will be followed by a year of probation.
The youth had earlier pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and possession of a prohibited weapon.
The accused received one for one credit for the four months he has spent in custody awaiting disposition of the case.

What bugs me the most...the kid try to murder Tanner, and yet just because he is a youth, means he gets about a year and a half in Juvenile detention, and a few hours of community service...if he is willing to do such an atrocity, then there is more to look into, how he was raised, where he lives, and he is psychologically messed up. Doctors can do tests all they want on him...guess what it doesn't change what he did, its a mental issue, he had shown no remorse...for what he did.
