A yirdaki that has for some years been in the iDIDJ Reference Collection, this instrument is the best example of Datjirri's work that we have acquired. We like it because of the carved relief figurative work of Gany'tjurr (Heron), an important totem of the Dhalwangu people. Though not as elaborate as Datjirri's most labour-intensive carvings, this instrument stood out for its rustic boldness. It is also an instrument that had been in favour with young aspiring Yolngu players, their constant handling of the yirdaki has left a light patination on the wood.

Acoustically, this stick is best described as nuggety, compact and efficient. Responsiveness is very good on account of the nicely tapered shape and the perfectly comfortable oval mouthpiece. Elasticity in the air column is excellent giving clearly defined tongued accents. At G#, the overtone note is a natural and easy progression from the G fundamental.

An altogether superb and rare example of Datjirri's work.

This yirdaki is for sale in the iDIDJ Store:
