US Commander in Japan: North Korea a Threat

U.S. forces in Japan and across Asia were put on high alert after a series of Pyongyang's recent military actions, including missile launches and a nuclear test.

[Lt. Gen. Edward Rice, Commander, U.S. Forces Japan]:
"We assess that their military remains a very capable and formidable force, one that we must be prepared to confront in all dimensions of its capability, and together with our allies, continue to be vigilant against any number of scenarios that could unfold regarding the DPRK."

In one of its latest moves, Pyongyang test-fired seven missiles on the U.S. July 4th Independence Day in an apparent act of defiance of Washington.

The launches alarmed Japan and South Korea, which are within range of North Korean missiles.

Rice says the planned revamp of U.S. military forces in Japan, including moving 8,000 Marines to Guam, will depend on the outcome of the Japanese national election next month.

Japan has followed Washington's lead in return for protection under its "nuclear umbrella".
