On May 4, 1970 the Ohio National Guard opened fire into a busy college campus during a school day. A total of 67 shots were fired in 13 seconds. Allison Krause, William Schroeder, Jeffrey Miller, and Sandra Scheuer were killed. Nine students were wounded.

This series of 67 paintings was made using documentary references, including John Paul Filo's Pulitzer-winning photographs. The paintings are strung together over the course of 13 seconds using a sort of stop-motion animation. The animation includes a sound file obtained from Alan Canfora, a Kent State eyewitness, victim, and expert.

  • A little word to the wise. Don't throw rocks at armed men and act like bad-azzes because you believe their rules of engagement don't apply to worthless hippie activists.

  • Aspects of the way this is painted makes me think of the movie "Look Both Ways." I think we have the DVD somewhere if you want to watch it some time. This piece is interesting work, Chandler. I'm digging this new direction you seem to be taking.
