A double cylinder, single acting oscillator steam engine. This was my second attempt at making a simple engine, based on the oscillating principle.

  • Interesting! You could test the RPMs with a laser tachometer...

  • Thanks James.

Got any ideas for a do-it-yourself tach project?

  • Buy a laser tachometer on Ebay.

  • Thought they would have been more expensive. Probably can't build for the price. Thanks.

  • Cool, you can make a fuel powered blender

  • sehr schon,gute gemacht

  • you will know the frequency at that point of stationary pistons. Not necessarily the highest rpm.

  • 2 solutions to rpm.

    1) know the frequency of your light source, i.e. the bulb that lets you see or indeed the frequency of daylight. When the pistons look as if they are stationary, that is a simple multiple of the fundamental frequency of that light source.

    or

    2) if you have a musical ear.marry the highest tone of the engine to a known musical note.hence you will know the frequency thus rpm.

    great vid

  • Great job!
