"Sudden Light" by Dante Gabriel Rossetti I have been here before,
But when or how I cannot tell:
I know the grass beyond the door,
The sweet keen smell,
The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.

You have been mine before,—
How long ago I may not know:
But just when at that swallows soar
Your neck turnd so,
Some veil did fall,—I knew it all of yore.

Has this been thus before?
And shall not thus times eddying flight
Still with our lives our love restore
In deaths despite,
And day and night yield one delight once more?

  • ~A flock of sheep that leisurely pass by, one after one; the sound of rain, and bees murmuring; the fall of rivers and seas, white sheets of water, and pure sky; I have thought of all by turns, and do lie sleepless~ William Wordsworth,

  • From Christina Rossetti, "Come blessed sleep, most full, most perfect, Come, if so I may forget the whole; Forget my body and Forget my soul,",

  • A FLOCK of sheep that leisurely pass by

One after one; the sound of rain, and bees

Murmuring; the fall of rivers, winds and seas,

Smooth fields, white sheets of water, and pure sky;—

  • Thanks so much Shela for your message.

    Very nice piece.

    Best wishes.

  • This is a lovely score to one of Rossetti's miscellaneous poems. The poems of Dante Gabriel Rossetti have that unique quality of allowing the reader to immediately step into the character and experience the action versus reactionary verse with ease. A great combination, thank you Shela.
