Court Stops Philippines Territorial Deal

Malaysia is calling for peace in the southern Philippines. This follows a temporary restraining order by the Philippines Supreme Court that halted a territorial deal between the government and Muslim separatists.

STORY:
This is the latest setback for peace in the nation's volatile south. And it came just a day before the agreement between Manila and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front was set to be signed.

Malaysia has been brokering the talks between the two sides. The proposed deal was meant to formally re-open peace talks to end a near 40-year conflict in the region.

A conflict that has killed more than 120,000 people, and displaced another 2 million.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Rais Yatim hopes it was just a temporary impasse.

[Rais Yatim, Malaysian Foreign Minister]:
"We would like just to say that this is a set back and it should be overcome soon. We must respect the judicial position of the Philippines through the supreme court and we must wait for further development but for the fact that this has been going on forn the sake of humanity, peace and the future prosperity of that region."
Philippine Foreign Minister Alberto Romulo, described the set-back as a temporary delay which can be overcome.

"We will continue to go around the country and the Southern Philippines in order to advise and to inform all the stake holders in this agreement. Because as I said the larger issue is peace and stability and development and I believe that all Filipinos agree that there must be peace and stability in the region so this temporary procedural delay, which is part of the constitutional set-up, I believe would eventually be overcome."


The Mindanao conflict first flared in the 1960. The Muslim minority - known as the Moros - launched an armed struggle for their ancestral homeland in the south.
